School closed over students' rampage

Machakos, Kenya: More than 300 students of Kaseve secondary school in Machakos sub-county were yesterday send home after the school was closed indefinitely following a stampede.

The rioting students were protesting the sacking of a male teacher by the school's authority.

The problem started when the male teacher was allegedly discovered having an affair with a female student prompting the administration of the school to fire him.

But hell broke loose when the students realized that the teacher had been relieved of his duties and started throwing stones and wrecking everything in the school demanding the reinstatement of the teacher.

The Machakos sub-district education officer Mr Richard Midamba, was called and held a consultative meeting with the school's board and the teachers which concluded the closure of the school.

It was disclosed that the riots were as a result of the students having been incited by the said teacher.

''We therefore decided to have the school closed indefinitely while we allow the Board to use the laid down procedure to lay off the teacher and take any other necessary action against him for breaching the education act by befriending a student and inciting others to violence'' said Mr Midamba.

He called upon the parents to be patient as the matter was being resolved through proper channels.

Mr Midamba said the action by the teacher was so unbearable given the fact that he was just an employee of the BOG and not the Teachers Service Commission.

He cautioned other teachers against the errant trend which portrayed a bad image of the teaching community.

Mr Midamba said the laws governing the education sector will not be softened on any teacher who deliberately commits such a serious offense.

Several parents expressed shock over the teacher's conduct saying appropriate action should be taken against him.

''We cannot afford to have such rogue teachers in our school with ill motive against our daughters'' said a parent who demanded immediate and severe action against the teacher.
