Tana River County releases Sh45 million for education bursaries

Tana River, Kenya: Tana River County Government has released its first batch of Sh75 million that has been set aside for school bursaries for needy students in the 15 wards of the three sub counties.

On Tuesday, Sh45 million was disbursed in cheques to secondary school principals and universities in a ceremony held at governor's office in Hola town and attended by all education stakeholders.

The Tana River deputy Governor Siat Jire, who presided  over the occasion, said that the remaining S 30 Million will be given out in the next few days and appealed to school heads to sending  away students due to fees arrears.

In a speech read on behalf of the Governor Husein Dado, Jire said the county has prioritised education as back bone of development adding that the area has lagged behind in various developments due to high level of illiteracy among the youth.

He said the move to set up county bursary kitty was aimed at reforming education sector.

He added that the county government has also set aside over Sh260 million in the current financial year in the education sector.
