One-stop clearing posts to be operational by April, says Principle Secretary

Kenya: Five clearing border posts are expected to be operational by April, this year.

East African Affairs Principal Secretary John Konchellah yesterday, said that once launched, the 'One Stop Border Posts (OSPBs)', will help reduce time taken in clearing cargo and persons at border entry points.

"The OSPBs are 70 per cent complete and will be launched by April. The idea is to have all exit and entry formalities handled at one location in the country of destination in an initiative that aims to save time and cut costs," said Mr Konchellah.

He said the five points, which include Lunga Lunga, Busia, Isebania, Taveta and Namanga will have clearing agencies from the two countries co-ordinating customs procedures.

The PS now wants border counties to enact laws that promote cross-border trade.

Speaking at Flamingo Hotel in Mombasa during an inter-counties forum on cross border integration, Konchellah said there was need for neighbouring counties to harmonise laws and regulations on cross-border trade to promote regional economic integration.

He asked Mombasa, Kwale, Taita Taveta, Kajiado and Busia to take the lead in mobilising resources to improve markets.
