Dont's of valentine's day

Here is a handy little guide to help point you in the right direction, to either keep your loved one sweet or make a new love blossom.

1. Don't forget it

Nothing kills a spark quite like being woken up on the morning of the 14th by your partner presenting you with gifts/chocolates/flowers, and then having that sudden realisation that its Valentines Day... and you have forgotten.

You either try and lie your way out of it with the "I've ordered it,but its not arrived yet..." or the "I've booked us a table for 7pm..." line and then desperately call every restaurant in town.

Do yourself a favour: remember the date, save the hassle.

2.  If you are unsure of her size, do NOT buy her clothes

If you are not 100% certain of your girlfriend's size, do not take the risk.

She is not going to feel sexy squeezing into a size 6 when she's a 14, and it's equally bad in reverse.

3. Don't buy the One Direction fragrance

Perfume is such a difficult thing to get right as it's so personal. We are talking about someone's scent - what is her signature scent?

Does she like musky, dark and woody, or light and floral?

If you are staring down the perfume aisle and you're really not sure which bottle to pick, please don't just go for the nearest - or the One Direction and Peter Andre fragrances.

Even if she knows every word to their songs and sings along in the shower, it doesn't mean she'll want to smell like a 13-year-old. If you panic - buy her the album, not the perfume.

4. Don't buy her cutesy teddy bears

"Bee mine"...really?

Teddy bears are cute, but too cliché for Valentines day. Don't go down the predictable route. Keep her on her toes.

Save the teddy bears for funfairs.

5. Don't say: "I was going to buy you chocolates, but you're on a diet."

It's never a good idea to hint at a gift and then take it away, but it is a rule on Valentine's Day that you can eat what you want. This rule is not made to be broken.

Don't use the D word and buy her the Lindor.

6. Don't treat your love to a gym membership

Even if they want one. It will make them feel like they need to go.

Whilst your at it, you may as well buy her a pair of spanx...

Adjustable control pants for Christmas binging liek in Bridget Jones' Diary Not romantic.

 7. Do not have bad breath

Although this seems obvious to most, it is important to remember.

No one wants to lean in for a kiss only to be greeted by a gust of last night's dinner. Brush your teeth and pack the Altoids.

8. Do not get a tattoo of your loved one's name/face

Of course, it does not directly follow that on Valentine's Day one must go to a tattoo parlour and get 'I love my wifey' engraved on their biceps - but it's worth noting.

Don't feel so overcome with love on Feb the 14th that you feel the need to make such a grand gesture that you promise your significant other some serious body art.

The danger of the dodgy tattoo is real - please, protect yourself. It won't make her feel more loved to see 'I love you with all my Hart'.

If you love her, say it, don't wear it.

9. Don't use coupons (or make it known that you are)

Everyone loves a buy one get one free - theres nothing wrong with a bargain.

But if you want to make her feel like she bathing in the lap of luxury, don't let on that the wine came free with the dinner...

10. Avoid using chat-up lines

If you are thinking that Val Day could be the day you finally ask the girl of your dreams out, then that's great. Why not go for it?

The one rule- please do not attempt to woo her with a chat up line.

They're naff, but also so generic. How is she going to take you seriously if she thinks you use the same line on every girl?

Avoid.

Happy Valentine's day!
