Rodgers warns Mario Balotelli: Shape up or get used to life on the Liverpool bench

England: Mario Balotelli has been warned by Brendan Rodgers that he might have to get used to being a substitute.

Balotelli returns from suspension for the Boxing Day clash at Burnley having still failed to open his account in the Premier League for the Reds.

And despite being the £16million man who was tipped to replace Luis Suarez, Rodgers has warned him that his performances have not warranted the starting position he craves.

Balotelli, who is available again after a ban for posting a controversial image on social media, will have to play second fiddle to the competition until he finds the form which earned him big money moves to Manchester City and AC Milan early in his controversial career.

"It is something he will have to (get used to)," said Rodgers

"If the team needs him from the bench then it is something he will need to become adjusted to - that is the same for every single player, not just him.

"When called upon, whether starting or off the bench, you ask your players to be ready."

Balotelli's performances have shown that he is not overly confident playing as a lone striker, as he does not possess the pace and intensity which Sterling and Sturridge both do.
