Knut official appeals to parents to support their children’s education

Parents have been asked to support education efforts in order to reduce illiteracy levels in the county.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) County Secretary General Patrick Chungani said lack of commitment by parents has played a key role in the county’s low performance.

The official was speaking at Mabole village after condoling with Governor Wycliffe Oparanya following the death of his mother Phanice Amunga.

“Parents should emulate mama Phanice in supporting their children’s education. Despite having no formal education, the late was determined and committed to ensuring that her children got the best education and it yielded results for her because her son is now governor of this county,” he said.

TEACHERS SHORTAGE

Mr Chungani also asked teachers to make maximum use of the school fees waiver agreement signed between Knut and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) to give them and their children a 15 per cent waiver on tuition fees.

The governor asked Knut to allow governors hire teachers in their counties saying this will help address the acute shortage of teachers.

He said lack of teachers threatens the quality of education offered and affects the county’s education standards.

“I have initiated talks with Knut to allow us hire secondary school teachers to address shortage of teachers in our schools. We also appeal to Knut to withdraw their case in court and allow governors to recruit Early Child Development Education teachers,” he said.

Mr Oparanya said the county government is planning to hire more than 500 teachers and have them stationed in secondary schools to curb the shortage of teachers across the county.
