Pokot MPs meet President Uhuru over KDF operation

Government’s indication of bowing to pressure from Pokot elected leaders seeking for the halting of military operations at Kapedo became vivid on Friday after a high profile meeting convened at State House Nairobi.

Five MPs from West Pokot and Baringo counties held talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta with the view of halting the Kenya Defence Forces (KDFs) operations in Kapedo following the massacre of police officers by bandits.

The leaders, who included MPs Mark Lomunokol (Kacheliba), David Pkosing (Pokot South), Samuel Moroto (Kapenguria), Philip Rotino (Sigor) and Asman Kamama (Tiaty), have continuously argued that the KDF operation is harming innocent civilians.

West Pokot Senator John Lonyangapuo and Woman Representative Regina Nyeris were also in the delegation.

An MP who attended the State House meeting told The Standard on Sunday there are high expectations the government will honor their calls.

“We had a fruitful meeting with the president at State House today (Friday) and we are expecting a positive response from him soon,” disclosed the MP.

More than 20 police officers and several civilians have been killed in the volatile region around the border of Turkana and Baringo counties since the conflict began.
