Education officials attacked by bandits

Four education officials escaped death narrowly when they were attacked by armed bandits in Losesia, Samburu East.

The officials, who included Teachers Service Commission Director of Education Joseph Indire, had toured schools in the remote district to monitor the on-going Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams since Monday.

"We had opted to use the Gotu route but found the bridge across river Ewaso Nyiro River impassable. So we drove back to use the Archers Post road," said Mr Indire yesterday.

WINDOW SHATTERED

The officer said armed men fired at the double-cabin Land Cruiser vehicle in Losesis at around 3pm. The window on the left side of the car was shattered by bullets.

"The driver did not stop; he sped off. Fortunately, no one was injured," said the official.

The Losesia road, which connect Isiolo with Merti, is mostly used by Isiolo residents during the rainy season as the only other alternative route.

It passes through Gotu River, whose makeshift bridge gets submerged whenever the river bursts its banks.
