Wavinya Ndeti’s appointment challenged

MACHAKOS COUNTY: A party representative from the National Alliance Rainbow Coalition-Kenya has challenged the appointment of Machakos gubernatorial loser Wavinya Ndeti as the Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC) chairperson.

Taabu Omia Wangati filed an application at the Political Parties Tribunal under a certificate of urgency seeking to have the registrar of political parties stopped from gazetting Wavinya and her team as members of the committee.

Mr Wangati said the former Kathiani MP's election did not take place according to the laid-down rules and regulations and was conducted in an arbitrary manner.

"The elections were not held as members raised concern with the rules, regulations and procedures which they were yet to be issued with," he said.

Wangati has named Wavinya, the registrar of political parties and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as respondents in the matter.

He wants the tribunal to further declare that no valid elections were carried out for the PPLC, and that no funds should be used to conduct the committee elections for office bearers at the county level. Wangati further wants IEBC and the registrar stopped from conducting elections for the committee at the county level, and that the names already forwarded be declared invalid.

Wangati said the elections that were to take place on August 28, failed to kick off as the members could not reach a consensus on how to proceed.

Through lawyer John Swaka, he said a task force set up amended the regulations but did not share them with other political parties as was required.
