Ward rep in hospital after gun attack

Kilifi; Kenya: A member of the Kilifi County Assembly is nursing injuries at Mombasa Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after he was shot several times as he drove into his home over the weekend.

Shella Ward MCA Adamson Kadenge was shot in the head and right arm at his home in Malindi's Muyeye area by gunmen who fled into the darkness without stealing anything.

After the shooting, the MCA's family called the police who took him to hospital.

Some MCAs who spoke to The Standard in Mombasa yesterday claimed the attack was an attempted assassination.

Mr Kadenge, an ODM member, is also deputy majority leader in the assembly has had many legal challenges to his election.

His election was nullified by an electoral court after a successful petition but he won the by-election in May this year.

Speaking before being wheeled into the ICU, Kadenge said the attackers raided his compound a few seconds after he disembarked from his car at around midnight.

"The attackers struggled with me before one of them drew his gun and shot me in the arm and head," said Kadenge.

Addressing the Press at the hospital Mwingo Kahingo, another Kilifi MCA, said that ward reps needed bodyguards.
"If Kadenge had a body guard he would not have been shot by the thugs," said Mr Mwingo.
