Residents accuse police of shooting herder, 16

Lodwar; Kenya: A 16-year-old boy was yesterday shot dead in Orwa along the Kapenguria-Lodwar highway, sparking protests from residents who pointed accusing fingers at police for the shooting.

Residents said the boy was herding his family's livestock in Kambi Karaya, an area prone to bandit attacks, when he was allegedly shot by the officers.

Some reports indicated that the boy had a gun and was accosted by officers from the Flying Squad who shot him.

The incident sparked fury among residents who questioned why the officers did not arrest the boy instead.

Former Sigor MP Christopher Lomada visited the scene of the shooting and condemned the incident, terming it harassment of the community by security agents.

He accused the police of using excessive force against innocent people and called for a thorough probe into the incident.
