Interpol issues international arrest warrant for Mombasa based businessman over ivory trafficking

Kenya: The Interpol has issued an international arrest warrant for Mombasa based Kenyan businessman Feisal Ali Mohamed over trafficking of ivory.

The organisation posted Mohamed’s picture and details on its website Thursday saying he is wanted for dealing with ivory.

“He is wanted for dealing in wildlife trophies contrary to section 84(1) as read with section 92 of the wildlife conservation and management Act No. of 2014 laws of Kenya,” reads part of the information.

The information indicated Mohamed is 46 and is supposed to serve a sentence. He is thought to be either in Mombasa or Lamu. Sources said he had been spotted in Kiunga, Lamu while trying to cross to Somalia for unknown mission.

According to police, Mohamed is the leader of an international poaching syndicate in East Africa.

Mohammed has been linked to the three tones of ivory found in Tudor, Mombasa, in June 2013. Member states of Interpol are now supposed to hunt down Mohamed and hand him to Kenya.

CID boss Ndegwa Muhoro said their move is part of efforts to contain the crime that is affecting the country at large.

“Let the public also help us in case they see him. Let them give us information,” said Muhoro.

Abdul Omar and Ghalib Kara, directors of Fujin Motors, were arrested in the Tudor raid and later charged where they denied having 314 pieces of ivory.

On June 23 Omar and Kara were released on a Sh10 million bond each before the court issued a warrant of arrest against Mohamed after he failed to honour court summons issued on June 11.

Ivory trade is rampant in the region despite efforts to contain the situation.
