Senators vow to control governors' spending

Two senators have insisted that governors who are yet to explain how they utilised millions of shillings entrusted to them must do so.

Senate Deputy Speaker Kembi Gitura (Murang'a) and John Lonyangapuo (West Pokot) asserted that the oversight role the Senate plays should not be misconstrued as fighting governors.

Gitura said the Constitution gives the Senate an oversight role to ensure proper utilisation of taxpayers' money within the counties.

“We should not be accused of waging war against the governors. We are only exercising our mandate of ensuring right spending of public funds,” said Gitura.

WHITE ELEPHANTS

Prof Lonyangapuo called on the county governments to fully engage the public in the implementation of development programmes. He claimed some governors had imposed some projects on the public.

“Engaging the public will help weed out culture of 'white elephant' projects. We should make sure only suitable projects are put up,” said Lonyangapuo.
