Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo orders lifestyle audit on junior officers to check corruption

Police boss David Kimaiyo has ordered an audit on the lifestyle of junior officers to check corruption.

He demanded that police officers who appear to be living beyond their means be reported to his office for action.

He argued that such officers maybe involved in crime and must be able to account for their lifestyle.

"I am therefore challenging commanders at all levels in the service to take it upon themselves to understand the conduct and character of the officers they supervise. It is now time that every commander is held accountable and answerable for the actions of their officers," said Kimaiyo.

He told police commanders to play their role in ensuring that the police service earns a good name.

"I expect you to make reports on officers who appear to be living far beyond their known means for the necessary action to be taken because such characters are the ones involved in crime and each officer must be able to account for his lifestyle,’’ IG said.

Kimaiyo spoke when he presided over the 8th annual meeting of senior Administration Police Service in Mombasa.

The police boss said the service has not performed well in areas of preventing corruption and inculcating professionalism and discipline amongst officers.

"In the recent past, there have been numerous cases of officers caught engaging in corrupt practices and others involving themselves in criminal matters which include armed robberies," he said.
