One killed, five seriously wounded in Turkana raid

Turkana, Kenya: One person has been killed and five people others seriously injured after suspected Pokot raiders attacked Kotaruk village in Loima Constituency, Turkana County on Wednesday.

Among the injured is an expectant woman.

The heavily armed raiders are said to have surrounded the village for two days from Tuesday 4am and sprayed several bullets in the air before driving away an unknown number of animals towards Akoret area in West Pokot.

Three Turkana herders, who attempted to resist the raid, were shot and are nursing injuries at Lodwar District Hospital.

Another raid occurred in Nakwamoru at Kapelibok and Kaptir villages in Turkana South Constituency where the raiders stormed three families and made away with cattle.

Speaking to The Standard on phone, Loima MP Protus Akujah and his Turkana South counterpart James Lomenen said hundreds of livestock particularly were driven away by suspected Pokot raiders but police managed to recover part of the stolen livestock.

The MPs claimed that they had lost 12 people in a month due to cattle rustling at the border of Turkana and West Pokot counties.

Out of the 12, they said, three were from Loima constituency and the rest from Turkana South although the number could not be authoritatively confirmed by The Standard.
