Women leaders okay new polls team for Maendeleo Ya Wanawake

NAIROBI, KENYA: Former Maendeleo ya Wanawake leaders have expressed confidence in the newly constituted Maendeleo Election Board's ability to carry out a peaceful, fair and transparent election.

They asked the board to ensure the exercise is carried out in accordance with the Constitution.

"We realise that the timing is fairly short, but we have confidence in the team and the women of Kenya, and that the exercise will indeed consolidate the organisation's gains since its inception," said the former chairperson, Zipporah Kittony.

The elections had been scheduled for this Wednesday, following a court order, but were postponed after members disagreed. The board was set up to ensure the polls go on smoothly, and announce the new dates.

Ms Kittony, who was speaking on behalf of former leaders, also called on the members to uphold their tradition of a rotational chair.
