Riabai ward Member of County Assembly arrested for possessing illegal alcohol

Police in Kiambu are holding Riabai MCA Martin Wachira after an assortment of brews was allegedly found in his residential house, following a tip off.

Mr Wachira has been in the forefront in the fight against brews and was among leaders who spoke against the vice during President Uhuru Kenyatta visit to Kiambu on Sunday.

Yesterday’s raid was led by Kiambu police station Officer Commanding Station Sebastian Lekupe and Kiambu Senior Chief George Kibugi.

They were accompanied by members of the public who destroyed the brew and part of it was confiscated in order to be taken to the Government chemist for testing.

“Yes we have arrested the MCA for being in possession of illegal goods, and tomorrow (today) we will arraign him in court after further investigations,” said Mr Lekupe.

The MCA was later handcuffed and taken to Kiambu police station, where his colleagues thronged the station in a bid to secure his release.

His constituents who had visited his home were shocked.

“I woke up at 5am to vote for him as my Ward Rep, but today I’m ashamed if he is the one doing this,” said Jane Wanjiru, a resident of Riabai.

On Saturday last week, during a meeting organised by journalists and local leaders in Kirigiti stadium, he talked passionately of how he is championing war against illicit brew.

The following day when President Uhuru worshiped at St Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Mr Wachira accused some administrators of being a stumbling block in the fight against illicit brew.

“Your excellency like you directed we do, we have joined forces in fighting the illicit brew and we have poured lots of it in our respective areas but police and chiefs have been collecting bribes from the brewers,” he said on Sunday.
