Man United were right to replace David Moyes with Louis van Gaal - Football Manager provides the proof

Conclusive proof at last! Manchester United were right to sack David Moyes in favour of Louis van Gaal.

The Dutchman's slow start to life at Old Trafford led many to suggest his predecessor had actually done a better job.

United and Van Gaal spent close to £150million last summer, but for much of the season supporters struggled to see where that money had gone.

But would Moyes really have done any better with the current squad? Well don’t worry - Mirror Football is here to provide answers that are definitely scientific and not at all speculative.

The people over at Football Manager have simulated a season with Moyes in charge of the current squad - this is how it turned out.

Under Moyes, United would have finished in sixth in the table on 67 points, missing out on Champions League football. They would have also finished below rivals Liverpool and 16 points behind eventual winners Chelsea.

Van Gaal would only need one win from his remaining five Premier League games to better that total - he’s also almost certain to finish in the top four, therefore achieving a return to the Europe's top competition.

In Football Manager’s simulation, United also scored fewer goals per game, and conceded more.

Moyes would have failed, like Van Gaal, in both domestic cup competitions. The former Everton boss and his side would have (apparently) suffered morale-sapping defeats by Hull and Swansea - slightly better than losing 4-0 to MK Dons, mind.

Other similarities between the two managers’ seasons would have included wins against Liverpool and Tottenham and a loss to Chelsea in the second half of the season.

Wayne Rooney was apparently destined to become United’s top scorer in 2014/15 - finishing top of the charts in both scenarios, although he scored fewer goals under Moyes.
