Why Wayne Rooney 'won't repeat boxing celebration'

Wayne Rooney has vowed not to repeat his boxing celebration - because son Kai has been copying it in the classroom.

The Manchester United captain celebrated his strike in the 3-0 victory over Tottenham earlier this month by imitating his own knock-out at the hands of Stoke defender Phil Bardsley.

A video emerged on the day of the Spurs win, of Rooney and former team-mate Bardsley taking part in some boxing, when the United skipper was knocked to the ground.

"For me, it wasn’t a big issue. I was in a house with some friends," said Rooney.

"Obviously I was caught on the wrong end of a punch, but I wasn’t knocked out like it was reported. Unfortunately the video stopped there...

"There has been stick around the place, at United and England training, but you’d expect that. They’re a group of lads.

"I’ve always loved boxing. Unfortunately, sometimes, it didn’t go too well for me!

“It’s funny, my wife went to pick up my lad from school and saw him doing that (celebration) in the classroom. I’m sure you won’t be seeing that again.

“I spoke to the manager (Van Gaal). He didn’t see it as a big issue - other people obviously do.”

When it was suggested he could have fallen badly and been seriously injured, Rooney replied: “[But] I never, so...

"Obviously, I like boxing. I come from a boxing background. If I’d felt it was that wrong, I’d have apologised to the right people - if I felt it was wrong.”
