Tension high in Turkana East as bandits kill four people

TURKANA, KENYA: Tension remains high in Katir in Turkana East after four people were killed and one injured by armed bandits.

Confirming the incident, Kapedo Member of County Assembly, Dydimus Chegem, said that the four herders were killed on Saturday at 5pm.

He added that the five had gone on surveillance so that they can bring the animals to the watering section.

"It is sad that we have lost and we keep losing people to these bandits. These young men who were killed had a promising future that was cut short by the bandits," said Chegem.

Lokori/Kochodin ward admin, Lotabo Shabaan and Kapedo/Napeiton ward admin, Lomeyan Ewoi said travelling to their wards has been curtailed by the bandits.

"If we are living in a country where movement is curtailed, where are we really headed," asked Lomeyan.

Lotabo urged the security team to leave Kapedo and go to the villages where they will work with the National Police Reservists so as to arrest the bandits.

Lomeyan asked why the government has been slow at solving the killings that have been rampant in the region.

"The killings here are the same as that which happened in Mt. Elgon and Tana River.  Why is it taking so long to solve the problem?" asked Lomeyan.

He added that they thought the president's directive would stop the killings but so far nothing has been done.

The leaders urged the government to ensure that security returns in the region.
