Government reminded to come to the aid of terrorism victims

Terror Victims

The government has been reminded to come to the aid of terrorism victims, some of whom are languishing in poverty. Victims of Terrorism Organisation – Kenya (VTOK) says majority of people affected by terrorist acts are unable to engage in viable economic activities due to either injury or trauma.

Acting director of the organisation, Eliud Ambani, said they were in the process of compiling a list of all victims who have been ignored, despite promises by the government to intervene and help whenever terrorists strike.

Citing the Westgate mall attack, Ambani claimed they had established that many of the victims never received sufficient help in terms of financial support.

“Those from poor backgrounds are forgotten immediately, yet they are Kenyans protected by the Constitution,” he added.

“With support from the government, well-wishers and partners, we hope to give hope to these devastated souls that suffer in silence,” siad Ambani. He disclosed that his organisation intended to create a network for survivors to share experiences, lessons and expectations during the recovery process. The network will also create a database for reference as well as scholarly research.

The Westgate attack left 67 people dead and scores injured. Since then, terrorists have carried out frequent attacks on Kenyan soil. “We urge the government to listen to the cry of the survivors. In the process of healing and recovery, survivors inform the global fight against terrorism. Our duty to victims should never end just because their medical expenses have been paid,” said Ambani.
