'Tribeless Sonko' linked to student murder after bar fight

Killer businessman   Crowds mill around Club Etonia where a student was allegedly shot

Little is known about a controversial Kimilili businessman who allegedly pulled a trigger on a university student two weeks ago at his club following a bar brawl.

Multiple sources and the authorities claim the tycoon’s biodata, for at least the last five years, is nonexistent.

His age on the charge sheet at the Bungoma High Court is not recorded, neither is his tribe.

But he is estimated to be not more than 30 years old, according to those who have seen him. So scanty is information on Waswa, that nobody had his picture when a manhunt for him was launched. Local journalists had to make an appeal on social media for anybody with his photograph, but with little success.

The wealthy businessman, who went to several secondary schools but still dropped out before KCSE exams, was born in Kimabole village in Mt Elgon, but moved to Misikhu in Webuye East four years ago after staying in Mombasa for some time.

The secondary schools he reportedly attended include Kimilili Boys, Namwela, Busakala and Kimukung’i, where he had short stints and was expelled for indiscipline. According to one of his close friends, he is a very private person and few people know him.

“He never stays in one place for more than 10 minutes and he is always on the move. He has a palatial house in Makhese along the Webuye-Kitale Highway, right behind what was formerly Misikhu Hospital, but he hardly sleeps in the house that has a high wall,” said the friend, who added that the property is now heavily guarded after a mob tried to raze it.”

“He has two other apartments along the same road with high walls. In all the houses, there are always a lot of young people and posh cars drive in and out from the homes where a bee-hive of unknown activities take place.”

Waswa drives in the latest cars and is always in a convoy of vehicles that include a Toyota Harrier, Lexus and a Toyota Corolla Mark XI. Most of the time, he is in the company of a bevy of light-skinned beauties.

“You can never tell which car he is in because he is always in a convoy of at least three cars, which he keeps switching between from time to time,” said the acquaintance of Waswa.

How did he acquire his wealth?

“I will not answer that question. But as far as I am concerned he is a legitimate businessman. He owns property in Mombasa where he moved to. He also has interests in the entertainment industry. Apart from Club Etonia in Kimilili, he owned Club Mojos in Bungoma which he later sold. He also owns two other new entertainment spots in Webuye town - Club Voltage and Club Cruz,” he says.

Although the friend does not admit it, Waswa, according to a police sources, was arrested sometime in 2012 in connection with a fake money racket in Webuye. He was held briefly and released.

A close relative of Waswa, who spoke to The Nairobian and asked not to be named, said the tycoon completely changed after he left his rural home in Mt Elgon for Webuye.

“We heard he was staying with a Congolese family in Muslim Estate in Webuye town where he worked as a houseboy. The Congolese apparently was found on the wrong side of the law and relocated out of the country. We suspect it is then that Hendrix took over their unknown business which he was entrusted with by the foreigners,” said the relative, who only gave his name as Buyela.

Those who know him say he is often confused for a Congolese, as he speaks Swahili language with a Central African accent.

He also allegedly enjoys police protection as he is said to have highly-placed friends in the force.
