Goalkeeper Mercel Nzarora of Police was the hero, scoring the winning penalty to edge out Atletico of Burundi 9-8 to qualify for the semi-finals of the Cecafa Kagame Club Cup at Nyamirambo Stadium in Kigali.

All 10 players had taken their penalties but the teams tied 8-8, with Atletico losing two and APR two.

The goalkeepers were called upon and Kandolo Akimana shot wide while Nzarora scored. The game went to penalties after the normal 90 minutes without the option of extra time.

Starting off in hot weather, Atletico’s Noah Akanakimana got the fans on their feet barely five minutes into the game as his shot from outside the Police danger zone beat goalkeeper Marcel Nzarora, but hit the posts.

Police survived the scary first moments of the game to turn the tide as each side hunted for the opener. Jerome Sina of Police side-stepped his marker Patient Muhuza in the 10th minute to get a shot on target from inside the box, but goalkeeper Kandolo Akimana stood tall in goal.

Jimmy Mbaraga dribbled inside the Atletico goal but his shot struck the side netting. It was all Police in action now as the Burundians recoiled to defend. But Atletico quickly reorganised their midfield and held on to possession as Akanakimana, Tonton Hakizimana and Alexis Hakizimana towered through the Police defence line. Their efforts on goal were not strong though. The game oscilated from one end to the other.

Police changed strategy and opted for long-range shots, but they never disturbed Akimana in goal and the first half ended goalless.

On resumption, the teams looked lively after a pep talk and both sides played cautiously not to concede. It was Police who went offensive, with Kipson Atuheire coming close but his strike was blocked by Akimana in goal.

Meanwhile, today, Ugandan side Kampala City County Authority (KCCA) will seek to go a step closer to the title as they take on Atlabara of South Sudan.

Having emerged as one of the tournament dark horses by beating APR to top Group B, attention will be on coach George ‘Best’ Nsimbe as he lines up his charges against the Sudanese side.
