Three poachers shot dead in Tsavo

Tsavo, Kenya: Three suspected poachers were Thursday morning gunned down by Kenya Wildlife Service personnel in the expansive Tsavo Conservation Area (TCA) within Taita-Taveta County.

Acting on a tip off from the public, the KWS personnel laid an ambush at Mbuyuni in Tsavo West National Park where they shot dead the poachers.

According to police and KWS, one of the poachers managed to escape.

Taveta OCPD Gababa Darso and area KWS Warden Jospeh Kavi said the poachers were shot when they defied orders to surrender.

Mr Darso said a rifle with seven rounds of ammunition, two elephant tusks and several bows and poisoned arrows used by the poachers were recovered.

Speaking to The Standard at the scene of the incident Thursday, Darso and Kavi said those gunned down had no identification documents and their fingerprints had been taken to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Nairobi for identification purposes.
