Tharaka Nithi, Kenya: A student has committed suicide in Marimanti village, Tharaka Nithi County over school fees.

David Nyamu, the father of the boy, said he declined to give his son the Sh200 he had come to collect at the market that morning.

Nyamu was later called home to see the body of his son dangling from a tree on the family farm.

According to a suicide note found on the victim, his father had refused to pay his school fees and that is why he took his life.

Confirming the incident, the County Police Commander, Johnston Ipara said the body of the boy was taken to Meru Level Five Hospital for post mortem analysis.

In other news, a man drowned in the overflowing River Mutonga.

Lazarus Marita was reportedly crossing the river when the incident occurred. His body was recovered five kilometres from the bridge by the police.

The police boss is urging residents to be careful when crossing rivers especially in the rainy season. “Cases of drowning increase in the rainy season and it is the responsibility of every resident to avoid such risky places,” Mr Ipara said.
