Teacher allegedly hits pupil to death while 'instilling discipline’

Kirinyaga, Kenya: A teacher who allegedly clobbered a Standard Seven pupil to death while instilling discipline at a private school in Mwea, Kirinyaga County this morning has been arrested.

The pupil, aged 13 years, was said to have been in the company of six others who were being disciplined by the teacher when he was allegedly hit at the back his neck and collapsed.

Acting Mwea East OCPD Mohamed Uka said the incident occurred at about 6 am when the teacher cum proprietor of Roka Academy allegedly struck the child on the neck, leading to his collapse.

Uka however said the matter was only brought to his attention after 11 am when the child was rushed to a private mission hospital where he was pronounced dead.

On learning of the spine-chilling incident, irate members of the public stormed the day and boarding primary school baying for the blood of the teacher.

As tension heightened anti-riot police were called in to contain the enraged parents and members of the public who had by then taken control of the main gate.

By 3pm, police were able to control the surging crowd from the nearby busy Ngurubani market and ordered the school closed down indefinitely on security grounds.

The teacher had to be sneaked out of the institution to escape the wrath of the furious parents and led away by the police who later confirmed he was now under arrest.

Uka also confirmed the suspect has been taken into custody and is expected to appear in court once piecing up of all the information regarding the early morning incident is completed.

Uka said his officers will continue to keep vigil at the school until normalcy returns while some parents vowed to look for an alternative school.
