Kenya: CID detectives want a police corporal to be charged in court over the death of Kitui deputy CID boss Zebedayo Maina.

A team that investigated the death of Maina has asked the Director of Public prosecution Keriako Tobiko to charge the corporal over the death.

The team sent the probe file to the DPP on Wednesday with the recommendations after investigations found out that the bullet that killed Maina was fired from a gun that belonged to one of the officers who were present when the incident happened, officials aware of the findings revealed.

Maina was buried last Friday at his farm in Miiri, Nyeri County with his family calling for justice.

Maina was shot dead on August 3 by his junior during a police operation to rescue a five-year–old girl who had been kidnapped in Ruai, Nairobi.

Police investigation into his death revealed that Maina, a former head of the feared anti-Mungiki squad named KweKwe and Eagle squads was accidentally shot by his junior.

The probe team headed by CID Director of Investigations Mohammed Amin visited the scene of the shooting as part of their investigations.

The investigations revealed that the accused officer fired the killer bullet into the right buttock of Maina.

Apart from Amin, Deputy Director of police reforms Kingori Mwangi and head of operations Francis Njiru conducted the probe.

Two people who had been arrested over the shooting incident have since been released.

“It is clear that even though he denies it, the killer bullet was fired by one of the officers who were at the scene,” concluded the officers in their report.
