Men and Sex after 45

Sex is extremely important to men and most remain interested in it regardless of age. But some find out that despite their sexual interest, their functions may change with time and seasons.

Sex is an instinctive act considered a basic human need, a gift from God uniting partners for pleasure and procreation that should be explored and enjoyed to the fullest. The science attached to it is complex though because for men to achieve arousal involves the act of the mind, physical attraction, emotional wellbeing, together with sufficient supply of the male hormone, testosterone. 

After the age 45, the decline of testosterone levels affects the intensity of sex drive. Most men make enough testosterone to maintain libido throughout life. However, a study done on sexual problems indicated that on average, testosterone levels fall by about 1 per cent per year after 45. Generally erectile dysfunction increases as men age, with 52 per cent of men aged 45 to 70 having some degree of sexual dysfunction.

The reality is that when one is younger, testosterone levels are higher, so is the sexual drive. However, with age it declines and while one may be thinking sex they are unable to actualise the desired performance with the same youthful energies.

What must one do?  Well, first, it is imperative to accept the reality of life, embrace the seasons of life and thrive in every season! Here are some tips;

• Good physical and psychological health cannot be over emphasised.

•  Increased intake of certain foods like broccoli, tomatoes and pomegranate juice which are great sex boosters.

•  Maintain good body weight; Body fat inhibits testosterone production so you want to keep the weight off. This will also make you feel better, confident and energetic. 

• Maintain good healthy relationships with your partner, open communication and transparency.

• After 45 you will need more physical stimulation so encourage your partner to keep up good looks. Give more affection, attention and appreciation. You will reap that which you sow in greater value.

• Structure quality time with your partner, exercise concentration skills, be creative, perhaps a massage treat for one another, avoid distractions of telephone calls, radio or TV and instead listen to your preferred soothing music.

• Certain scents are said to put people in the mood, for instance some confess by lavender, vanilla and lotus flower.  Find out what works best for your man.

• The best way to preserve sexuality is to stay active. Life is about habits and the more you stay active, the better it gets.

• Remain faithful to your partner and keep the matrimonial bed pure, whatever you do don’t blame your partner for any inadequacies.

 It is very important to be patient, understanding and accommodating.
