Tourists chased by giraffe

They had set off on safari to see wild animal up close.

But a group of tourists got much more than they were hoping for when a wild giraffe took umbrage at their proximity and gave chase.

One of the party pulled out his camera phone and captured the drama unfold - including the amusing expressions of pure panic etched across the face a passenger at the back.

Her frantic attempts to get the driver to speed up has helped the video of the pursuit go viral.

The grainy images sees the expression of a blonde woman, sitting at the rear of the jeep heading through the South African game park, turn to pure terror as she realises the animal is gaining on them.

She ducks down and yelps frantically for the driver to speed up in a bid to outrun the giraffe.

But the vehicle can't escape the animal as it bears down on the group along a twisty dirt track - coming within feet of the frightened tourists.

Passenger Henk Roos, who filmed the incident and uploaded it to YouTube, told 9News the group had been touring the park after attending a wedding.

'After about 5km of being chased I started recording the chase on my phone,' he said in a post underneath the video.

'You can see how he gets closer and closer after every turn. We started to run out of road and the ranger banged on the side of the jeep to scare him off. We started to make a noise and he stopped.'

Fortunately the giraffe eventually lost interest in the group and can be seen trailing off toward the end of the video.
