Floods cut power supply in Malindi, Kilifi

Malindi, Kenya: The whole of Kilifi County including Malindi town was plunged into darkness on Monday after Kenya Power switched off one of its substations after it flooded.

Kenya Power officials said they had to switch off the Kilifi Substation after it was submerged on Sunday night to prevent its equipment from being damaged by water that flooded the area following heavy rains experienced in the coastal area.

“The substation was switched off this morning to prevent a possible short circuiting and damage of power equipment,” the Company’s Energy Purchase and System Control Manager Eng. Patrick Mawala.

Mawala said the Company’s engineers were pumping water out of the substation control room with the aim of restoring power supply to affected areas.

Kenya Power Communications officer Mr Kevin Sang said they expect to restore power by Monday evening.

Heavy rains have been pounding Kilifi County in the past four days flooding most areas.

The most affected areas are Mtwapa and Kilifi towns where several families have been rendered homeless after their houses flooded.
