Prisons athletes steal show in Mombasa

Mombasa,Kenya: Prison athletes dominated the fifth NBK/AK Athletics Weekend Meeting at the Shanzu Teachers Training College, Mombasa County.

The event ended yesterday with athletes posting poor timings probably due to slippery surface.

In 100m men, Steven Baraza of Prisons clocked 11.1 seconds to win the race with Francis Gakuru and Gerald Ouchiri both from Kenya Navy timing 11.3 and 11.5 for the second and third positions respectively.

In 200m, Thomas Musembi of Prisons ruled with a time of 22.6 while Solomon Buoga of Navy and Prisons’ Stephen Baraza clocked 22.8 and 23.0 seconds respectively.

In 400m, Elijah Manang’oi of Rongai won with a time of 48.1 seconds while Solomon Buoga (Navy) and Thomas Musembi (Prisons) timed 48.5 and 48.8 seconds in that order.

In 800m, Kericho’s Rotich Simon won in one minute 52.0 seconds. Paul Nzoka and Titus Kathoa, both from Machakos Athletics Club (MAC), clocked 1.52.9 and 1.53.3 respectively.

In 1,500m, Titus Kathoka and Paul Nzoka from MAC timed 3.51.3 and 3.51.7 while Rotich Mitei from KWS Forestry clocked 3.54.9 to come third.

In hammer, Boas Monyancha of Navy had a throw of 43.35m  with Eric Malemo of Prisons following second with a throw of 33.89m. Benson Maina of Navy was third with a distance throw of 24.87m.

In relay 4x100m, Prisons “A” and “B” teams won with a time of 43.8 and 44.2 seconds.  Kenya Navy were third with a time of 45.0 seconds.

In 200m women, Joy Zacharia of Police won after timing 25.9 seconds while Fresher Mwangi (Prisons) and Gladys Musyoki (Police) had 26.4 and 27.4 seconds respectively.

In 800m, Agnes Mulee, Cicelia Maria and Maureen Mutinda, all from MAC timed 2.18.6, 2.19.4 and 2.19. 5 respectively.

In 1,500m, Agnes Mulee and Cicelia Maria both from MAC timed 4.37.4 and 4.37.8 for the first and second slots respectively while Eunice Jeptoo of Kenya Navy was third with a time of 4.55.3 seconds.

In 4x100m relays, Nairobi team won with a time of 51.3 while Prisons and MAC clocked 52.9 and 55.1 respectively. In hammer, Olivia Kinyume of KDF had a distance throw of 34.50m, Christine Lai of KPA (24.8m) and Prisons’ Susan Kobiret (21.30m).
