MP wants SRC removed over pay cut

Nairobi, Kenya: Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi said on Thursday that he has issued a notice to the Speaker of the National Assembly for the removal of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for reducing legislators’ pay.

Linturi said the power to cut their pay was vested on Parliament and not SRC.

The MP’s move come days after President Uhuru Kenyatta called for the reduction of the public wage bill.

President Uhuru directed all arms of Government to work towards reducing the ballooning public sector wage bill.

The President who was deeply concerned with the hefty pay perks for public servants fell short of ordering a pay cut in his second public address during the official opening of the Eleventh Parliament in Nairobi on Tuesday.

He called for prudent management of public finances by officers serving in the Executive, Parliament and the Judiciary saying the current wage bill is unsustainable.
