Raila gets IEBC nod to contest for presidency

Nairobi, Kenya: Coalition for Reforms of Democracy (CORD) presidential candidate Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to contest for presidency in the March 4 elections.

Raila’s running mate Vice President Kalonzo  Musyoka was also cleared by IEBC at Kenya International Conference Centre in Nairobi on Wednesday.  

The PM was accompanied by Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetangula, ODM Chairman Henry Kosgey, Land Minister James Orengo, Education Minister Mutula Kilonzo, former MPs Dalmas Otieno, Franklin Bett and former AG  Amos Wako.

Speaking after being awarded the official certificate, Raila said he was impressed by the way IEBC had handled the electoral process so far.

“We hope to see fairness in the process. We do not want to see a repeat of what happened in 2007/2008 general elections,” he said.

He said the Cord team will conduct themselves with dignity and stick to principles and ethics and will hold peaceful campaigns.

“The  whole world is watching Kenya and they want Kenya to have a peaceful transition,” added Raila.

He urged other presidential aspirants to hold peaceful campaigns saying they should base their hunt for votes  on principles and issues.

Raila urge the security forces to be impartial and non partisan during campaigns and elections.

“I urge media to be impartial and give fair treatment to all competitors for all to have same platform  and may the best candidate win,” he said.
