LSK:Raila, Uhuru apologise for shambolic primaries

NAIROBI,KENYA: The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) wants CORD and Jubilee coalitions to apologise for the undemocratic manner in which nominations were carried out.

LSK chairperson Mr Eric Mutua said the two coalitions are campaigning on the platform of reforms and implementation of the Constitution but this was not reflected in the manner in which the primaries were carried out.

The LSK chair said CORD presidential candidate Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Jubilee Alliance flag bearer Uhuru Kenyatta must address the issue and assure Kenyans of their commitment to democracy and the rule of law.

“We are concerned that this failure by the political parties to respect democratic principles in their elections may be a reflection of how they may want to govern this country in the event they form the government,” said Mutua in a statement on Tuesday.

He said: “LSK strongly condemns the manner in which the main political party alliances CORD and Jubilee Alliance have conducted their nomination elections.”

LSK at the same time called on aspirants affected by the shambolic nominations to petition the IEBC and if a suitable solution is not found, they must resort to courts of law.

He said LSK will assist in taking such cases to court.

Mutua also asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to take charge of the election process by being firm on the campaign rules and set precedent by exercising its powers to disqualify those who breach the Elections Act.
