Nairobi, Kenya: Former World marathon record holder Paul Tergat has been named to the Johnnie Walker whisky’s hall of fame which shares and celebrates the life stories of some of the world’s most inspirational men through the global ‘Walk With Giants’ campaign.

Tergat becomes the first person in East Africa to be named to the Johnnie Walker whisky’s hall of fame and the fifth from Africa after fellow athletics legend Haile Gebrselassie from Ethiopia, entrepreneur Prince Kofi Amoabeng from Ghana, musician Manu Dibango from Cameroon and retired soccer player Samson Siasia from Nigeria.

He joins other world famous business and sports people named as ‘Giants. They include business magnate Richard Branson; Formula One world champions, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button; advertising creative, John Hegarty; fashion designer, Ozwald Boateng and explorers Ranulph Fiennes and Amyr Klink.

“In implementing the global Johnnie Walker ‘Walk With Giants’ campaign for Kenya, there was no doubt that running legend, Paul ‘The Gentleman’ Tergat, was the perfect choice. His inspiring tale of perseverance against all odds truly demonstrates the tenets of ‘inspiring personal progress’ in an emotional and compelling way that will inspire Kenyans everywhere to keep walking,” said Agnes Kinga, the Marketing Manager, Spirits – Kenya at East African Breweries Limited.

Tergat is respected globally for his exploits on the tracks and is one of the marathon legends across the world. Between 2003 and 2007, he held the world marathon record.

Reacting to his recognition as a Johnnie Walker ‘Giant’, Tergat said that it was humbling that the story of his life could be used to inspire people across the world.

The Johnnie Walker ‘Walk With Giants’ campaign, featuring the brand’s iconic Striding Man, celebrates individuals who can be considered ‘Giants’ in their fields and who share their personal stories to inspire others to take the next step on their personal journey.
