The Standard Group has launched an all-sports newspaper, ‘Game Yetu’ to provide informative sizzling sports coverage.

The sports newspaper is the first of its kind in the country.

Speaking at the function attended by the Standard Group employees at The Standard Group Centre Nairobi, the Assistant Director who is also the Group Chief Editor, John Bundotich beamed with satisfaction at the launched of the paper.

“It is an important day for us as a company and we must innovate new products continually,” said Bundotich.

He said the new product is a brain child of The Standard Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Sammy Sholei and appreciated the great support from the CEO and was hopeful the product will be the talk of the town.

The Sports Editor, Mr Robin Toskin who is the team leader Game Yetu expressed his gratitude at the launch of the paper and appreciated the team that worked with him.

He stated the paper will be a 24 page English newspaper and will be published twice weekly, on Tuesday and Saturday.

“We need to get one thing straight, the one thing is that we are in business to make money,” said Toskin. He added that Game Yetu is meant to tap into emotions that are generated in sports.

The paper will provide coverage of all sports discipline particularly on football.

This is driven by the popularity of the  English Premier League, La Liga, French Ligue, Italian Serie A, and the local Tusker Premier League.

He pointed out that the paper published on Tuesday will provide the analytical and reviews of the matches played over the weekend and gossip on sports celebrities.

The Saturday publication will speculate on the forthcoming matches and expose the tactical approaches the soccer pundits intend to use to win their respective matches.

The paper will also have a centre spread page that will highlight on sports gossip dubbed as ‘Pang’ang’a’.

Francis Munyoki, The Standard Group, Director, Value and Innovation said that the launch marks the beginning of an excitement for both the company and Kenyans.

He said the Standard Group was the first to launch the first newspaper in the country, the first independent television and now the first English sports newspaper.

He reiterated that the media has been charged with responsibility of changing, informing, and entertaining the public. He was confident the paper will succeed.

He charged the members to be committed to commercialise the paper adding that the target is to reach out to 17 million people.

The paper is set to be on the online platform soon.
