Uhuru meets South Sudan VP

Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta Wednesday morning met South Sudan Vice-President Riak Machar in Nairobi.

The two leaders discussed matters of mutual interest between Kenya and South Sudan, and praised the ties between the two nations.

Dr Machar said he hoped the next elections would be peaceful so that Kenya and the region's stability and economies will not be not affected.

He said South Sudan would respect the sovereign will of the people of Kenya, adding that his country would work with the leaders Kenyans elect on March 4 next year.

"South Sudan believes that Kenyans must be allowed to make their choice of leaders as this is their sovereign will," said Dr Machar.

On his part, Uhuru said the Constitution Kenyans enacted two years ago would transform the country adding that institutions are being rebuilt and issues that led to the violence in 2007 are also being addressed.

He also pointed out that political leaders are working together in an effort to reconcile Kenyans.
The two leaders expressed their continued support for the Lapsset (Lamu Port, South Sudan Ethiopia Transport) corridor project, saying it would open up the two countries and the whole region.
