Splashed or hushed

As far as events go, most women prefer their dresses short instead of flowing frocks, whether for a cocktail event or a red carpet one. That brings us to the debate of when to rock bright colours and when to do the black and white combo.

Seeing as at this time of the year and in this part of the world we are stretched thin on the red carpet events, let’s work with cocktail parties.

Tips:

• Bright coloured dresses always look sexy and stand out at every occasion, but be sure not to pass the message that you are overly comfortable and can go all out.

For fitting bright dresses, be sure the occasion is within your social circles and you want to make an impression.

• The Little Black Dress (LBD) is a saviour for all occasions, but if you give it a break and still want to look apt for the formal dinner party, get a combo of the black with white highlights here and there.

This fits well with your office functions or even high profile events.

• The rule of bright coloured dress is: It needs to complement your skin colour. Do not go all out with the screaming pinks if you are very dark skin — stick to the subtle bright colours that will complement your skin.

This also allows you to get away with minimal or no accessories and nude-coloured heels. And do not match your make-up with your dress.

• As for the combo, brighten your look with coloured clutches and heels so you do not end up looking like a nun.
