Two people were on Sunday arrested in Mumias in possession of 48 brooms of bhang.

The two suspects were transporting the illicit commodity on a motorcycle and were waylaid at Ekama area along Bungoma-Kakamega road.

Mumias West sub-county Police Commander Peter Kattam confirming the arrest said the two were signaled to stop by traffic police officer manning the road but they defied the order.

The motorcycle sped off and prompted a police chase.

"After defying an order to stop when flagged our officers gave chase for about 200 meters and caught up with them at Ekama," said Kattam.

A search was conducted and police found that the pillion passenger had wrapped 48 brooms of bhang around the chest and on his back.

The police boss said they are yet to establish the street value of the impounded bhang. The two are expected to be arraigned in court  today.

Police patrols have been intensified in the past few weeks along Bungoma-Kakamega and Busia-Kakamega roads in a bid to stop peddling of drugs.

Police in Mumias last week also arrested two men and impounded 680 litres of illicit liquor suspected to have been smuggled from Uganda.
