Administrator warns river about to burst banks

BUSIA, KENYA: Bunyala DC Khalif Ali Abdi has warned of possible floods following the bulging of River Sasala in Busia County.

Abdi said the water levels in the river have risen alarmingly in the last two days. He urged the residents to move to higher grounds for safety and avoid a last-minute rush.

“The water levels are now at 5.57m. I appeal to the residents to be on high alert and to be prepared for any eventuality in case the river bursts its banks and the water reaches the dykes,” said Abdi.

He stated that they are trying to contain the situation because there are possibilities that the floods will overpower the dykes and cause havoc.

Move livestock

Abdi added that the residents should also move their livestock to higher grounds.

He said that vehicles from Bunyala National Irrigation Board and other organisations are ready to evacuate the harvested crops to an identified site.

“The aim of the alert is to prepare the residents physically and mentally to avoid a repeat of what occurred last year and avert loss of lives and property,” he noted.

He reiterated that the Disaster Preparedness Centre is prepared for any outcome, adding five lorries from the National Water Cooperation and one motorboat and lorry from the Ministry of Special Programmes were also in place to handle any eventuality.

Take precaution

“We cannot sit back and watch; we must take precaution as a team for any eventualities. I want to assure Kenyans we are cautious,’’ affirmed Abdi.

Additionally, he said they are working with the Kenya Red Cross and the military to ensure they get the necessary support.
