David de Gea was at fault for the goal that Manchester United conceded to Everton according to Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Graeme Souness, although Souness admitted that VAR should have chalked it off.

Victor Lindelof put through his own net in the 36th minute of Sunday's match at Old Trafford, after De Gea had missed his punch from a Leighton Baines corner and the ball struck the Swede and bounced in.

Replays showed that De Gea was caught in the face by Dominic Calvert-Lewin's elbow as he missed his punch, while he was also coming under pressure from Yerry Mina.

But despite United's protests the goal still stood, and Neville didn't seem to have too much sympathy with De Gea on commentary.

"Well you can't say it [the goal] hasn't been coming this last five or six minutes. Everton are getting set-piece after set-piece," said the ex-United defender.

"Baines' delivery is wonderful, De Gea... well... that's back to his early days at Manchester United, getting bullied by the two onrushing Everton attackers.

"And then you have to say from a Lindelof point of view, he just doesn't see it right til the last split second.

"Does he get a little touch on it David de Gea? Yeah a little one, makes it a nightmare for the Manchester United defender. The goalkeeper has to punch."

In the studio Souness was also also critical of De Gea, although added that he thought the goal shouldn't have sood.

The former Liverpool midfielder said: “It’s obviously a foul but the keeper has to look at himself.”

United grabbed an equaliser through young substitute Mason Greenwood, but were ultimately forced to settle for a point from a 1-1 draw as Duncan Ferguson continued his impressive interim spell in charge of the Merseysiders.
