U.S. Embassy praises Kenya’s basketball team after historic win

The United States Embassy, Nairobi, on Friday heaped praises on Kenya’s basketball team, The Morans, following their triumph over Morocco in the FIBA AfroCan 2019 tournament in Bamako, Mali.

Kenya beat Morocco 96-66 to book a slot in the Saturday final where they will face Democratic Republic of Congo who topped Angola 84-78.

“Hongera to Kenya #Morans on your historic win yesterday, & good luck in the @FIBA #AfroCan finals!” wrote the US Embassy.


Sports CS Amina Mohamed could not hide her joy after Kenya’s triumph and lauded the boys for making the country proud.

“Go Morans @bballkenya @FIBA…Very proud of your performance. Tonight we have witnessed exceptional determination by the Morans to bring glory to our nation by winning @FIBA#AFROCAN2019 semi-finals game against Morocco.

“They will now play in the finals placing them firmly into the undeniable category of global basketball giants,” said the CS.


Interestingly, Kenya was in the same group with DRC and lost 82-65 but bounced back with a crucial 81-69 win over Nigeria.

They also beat Ivory Coast 85-83 in a fiercely contested match before upsetting tournament favourites Tunisia 82-76 in the quarter finals.


DRC are yet to lose a match in the tournament but will be wary of the Kenyan team that is full of confidence following a string of impressive results.
