Muranga man kills self over Sh3,000 mobile phone loan

A 25-year-old man committed suicide in Kandara after he was unable to repay Sh3,000 he borrowed using a mobile phone loan app.

Samuel Ng’ari, a resident of Githumu village, left his parents plucking tea leaves and hanged himself inside his house.

Neighbours said Ng'ari looked disturbed over the weekend after he received a message that he had been blacklisted from receiving loans in future owing to delayed payment.

Robinson Kimani said his son hanged himself around 4pm.

Mr Kimani said he was not aware his son had borrowed money through his mobile phone and was under pressure to repay.

“The family became concerned after he took long in his room only to find him dangling from the roof top,” he said.

His body was moved to Githumu AIC Mortuary.

Suicide note

Kandara OCPD Paul Wambugu said Ng'ari left behind a note, saying all his relatives and friends had deserted him.

“A suicide note was found in the room and police are investigating the matter to establish issues that could have led him to kill himself,” said Mr Wambugu.

He asked residents to advise youths against taking easy money.

“Suicide cases are on the rise in Murang’a. We need to look for ways to assist the youth when they encounter challenges in life,” said Wambugu.

In a week, Murang’a registers an average of four suicides.

The high number of people taking their lives has raised concern in the community, with leaders recommending that social workers be engaged to educate people on what to do when faced with problems.
