BOMET, KENYA: Small-scale dairy farmers in Bomet have reason to smile following the county government's move to regulate milk prices.

Governor Joyce Laboso led administration will buy all milk from farmers at cooling plants set up in every ward to cushion farmers from exploitation by intermediaries.

Farmers who are used to selling their produce at as low as Sh1 per liter will now be smiling all the way to the bank after the county announced it would buy their milk at Sh60 per liter.

Laboso said her administration in collaboration with the national government would install cooling plants in every ward to help bring dairy farmers together and help in marketing their produce.

She said besides regulating milk prices, the move will also ensure that the quality of milk is maintained.

She said her administration is seeking to go big on dairy by bringing all the dairy farmers under one umbrella before setting up a processing plant later this year.

“We have already identified Chebunyo as the location for a milk processing plant that will see milk from all the farmers processed and sold,” she said hinting her administration has identified BomaFresh as a brand name for locally processed milk.

Laboso said funds for the processing plant will be factored in the 2019/2020 financial year.
