Mourinho launches scathing attack on Man United legend Paul Scholes after Pogba’s performance

"It's not Paul's fault that he made much more money than Paul Scholes. It's just the way football is..."

Manchester United Manager Jose Mourinho has hit out at midfield legend Paul Scholes over his recent comments about Paul Pogba.

After Man United’s draw at home to Southampton, Scholes ripped into Pogba, saying that the midfielder is not the same person who the Red Devils signed from Italian champions Juventus for 89 million euros.

Scholes, who is now a pundit at BT Sports, accused Pogba of strolling on the pitch, far from the player he was at Juventus.

“Where’s the Paul Pogba we saw at Juventus? The player they bought. He was all over the pitch, he was tackling, he was fighting, he was sprinting to people, he was scoring goals from 25 yards out,” said Scholes.

In response, Mourinho attacked Scholes’ punditry saying the former United player has failed in his job as a pundit and only criticizes instead of properly analyzing situations.

This was prompted by Pogba’s performance in United’s 2-0 demolition of Everton at Goodison Park where he was named Man of the Match. He provided two assists.

“I think the only thing Paul Scholes does is criticise. I don't think he comments, I think he criticises, which is a different thing. I think Scholes will be in history as a phenomenal player, not as a pundit. Not every one of us has to be phenomenal like he was as a player. That doesn't mean that we all have to be phenomenal. Paul Pogba tries to do his best all the time. Sometimes he plays very well, sometimes he plays well, sometimes he doesn't play so well,” said Mourinho.

He then hinted that Scholes could be jealous of Pogba since the French maestro makes more money than the Englishman during his United days.

“It's not Paul's fault that he made much more money than Paul Scholes. It's just the way football is. If Paul one day decides to be a manager, I wish that he can be 25 per cent as successful as myself,” added Mourinho.

The win at Goodison Park saw Man United return to 2nd on the log, 12 points behind leaders Manchester City whose 18 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of minnows Crystal Palace.
