He looked at his wife and clenched his fist.
He was agitated. He felt like screaming.
He couldn't believe what he saw in his wife.
He breathed heavy. Restless.
His wife looked at him then closed her eyes.
"Shhh... It will alright" he whispered to her, tapping her.
She was wrapped up in a blanket.
He kissed her forehead then walked to the bathroom.
There, in the bathroom, he looked at his reflection in the mirror.
He stared at his reflection.
His wife has been ill. She has cancer and it was discovered late.
She has lost so much weight. The doctors say she has a few months left to live.
They have tried medication, therapy, but the cancer is still eating up her body.
He pulled out his phone and looked at the photos of his wife, the wife of his youth.
He looked at her photos when she used to looked radiant, full of life, glowing and happy.
Now she looks tired, weak, sick and in need. Dependant.
He is scared.
Scared that life is leaving her. Her spirit is slowly leaving her body.
The thing that pained him the most, is that for the past years he has not been the best of a husband. He used to cheat on her, beat her up, insult her, demean her, take advantage of her, take her for granted and ignore her.
Her spirit is leaving.
Their children are scared.
Her spirit is slowly leaving.
He started to think more about God.
He thought of how one day he will stand in front of God to give an account of the kind of man, husband and father he was on Earth. What will the God who gave him a wife say about the pain he caused her, the slaps he gave her, the stress he introduced her to and the tears he made her cry? What will God say about the affairs he had and how he abandoned his family yet he was the head of the family?
He thought of all the time he wasted destroying his own marriage. He felt bad.
His wife says that she has forgiven him and that it is sad that it took a life threatening sickness to make him love her.
These days, he is the best husband to her.
Her near death state showed him her value.
He looks at her and thinks "This is the woman God gave me, the one woman who has stood by me despite how badly I have been treating her"
"Honey. Honey" his ailing wife called him.
He ran back to the bedroom.
"Are you OK?" He asked her.
"I am, thank you. Are you OK? I sense you are stressed, are you OK my love? Everything will be OK. Don't worry" she said, rubbing his hand.
He got teary. Look at her, she is caring for him yet she is the one who is sick.
That moment he was reminded of how great a wife she is. All this time he has been having a good wife but he took her for granted.
He had a new found love for his wife.
He loves her. He really loves her.
But there is one thing he hates about her. He hates that she will not live for long now that he is back to loving her.
He hates that she will be leaving him and the children soon and will be no more.
Why didn't he love her right all this time?
Love your spouse. One day you will give an account to God of the kind of spouse you were; for whatever you do to your spouse, you do to God.
Love your spouse. Life is precious, don't waste it ruining your family. Don't waste it on meaningless things that lead to regret.
Love your spouse before it's too late
