Tunawajua : Least active women MPs in Parliament?

County_Nairobi

The position of women county representative has long been a source of debate, with many claiming that those elected to these posts do not do anything for their constituents.

While it may be difficult to gauge performance, one method of determining how active a Member of Parliament has been is to look at their contributions in the House. In March 2016, Mzalendo, a website which keeps records of the National Assembly and its members, released a comprehensive report detailing the contributions of nominated

MPs in the 11th Parliament. The report, compiled from March 2013, found that Laikipia Woman Representative Jane Wanjira Agnes Machira and Uasin Gishu Woman Rep Eusilah Jepkosgei were the least active members of the National Assembly.

Jane Machira had only spoken five times by the time the report was released in March 2016. She has since contributed 12 times in total, most recently in September 2016.

Eusilah Jepkosgei has made a total of 18 appearances, the most active period being March 2016 when she spoke eight times. In comparison, nominated MP Amina Abdalla has spoken 2,334 times in Parliament, while Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo has contributed 3,793 times.
