The first day of July started on a tragic footing after six university students perished in a grisly road accident on their way to a party in Gusii land. May their souls rest in peace. A lot of speculation have been going on pertaining the cause of their death; a lot of it pointing towards drunk driving.
The cause of the accident is somewhat of a controversy, nevertheless, but should it be alcohol, we should avoid driving under the influence at all cost. Whenever something like this happens, there seems to be a group of people who seem to be having some pretty good time sharing gory images on social media.
This has been going on despite the amount of ink that have been drained trying to sensitive them on the implications of such photos to the families of the victims. This unethical conduct is guided by the unyielding urge to take credit for being the first one to share the photos on the internet, while at the same time being indifferent to the plight of those affected. It makes one a hero of some sort in the internet.
Whilst we can go to any length in our struggle to remain relevant on the internet we should also ask ourselves some questions. What will this mean to the families of the victim(s)? What if my relative was involved, would I be comfortable seeing someone else do the same? Does my moral responsibility allow me to do this?
