Why CS Jacob Kaimenyi needs to resign

Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has failed in his duties.

There is no single issue affecting education that Prof Kaimenyi has helped resolve smoothly without first wading into prolonged and unnecessary controversy. To say the least, the sector is in a shambles and in dire need of level-headed leadership.

With the closure of primary and secondary schools due to the ongoing teachers’ strike, matters are getting worse.

In a democracy, we live by the rule of law. Court orders must be obeyed.

There has been no attempt by Kaimenyi and the Teachers Service Commission to invite teachers for talks on how to implement the courts’ orders to pay the 50 to 60 per cent salary increase. Instead, they have abdicated their duties by rushing to close schools. These are actions of panic and cowardice. It is a big shame.

Now we are told that KCSE and KCPE examinations scheduled to begin next month will go on with or without teachers’ participation. That is courting disaster.

These are all pointers that unless remedial measures are taken quickly, then the education sector is headed for total collapse.
