County livestock markets closed

Bungoma, Kenya: Veterinary department in Bungoma County has indefinitely closed down all livestock market rings following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease.

Bungoma South sub-county veterinary officer Wycliffe Wakhungu and his Kimilili sub-county counterpart Joseph Kanda said the move was necessary to caution farmers against losses, as they quarantine the animals to prevent the spread of the disease.

Dr Wakhungu said the notice had been given to farmers so as to avoid the movement of livestock until they are certified as disease-free. He warned farmers against grazing the livestock along the roads as this may increase the spreading.
